Worsship that pleases God

06/29/2024

I have learnt that worship is bowing and serving but now we worship in the holy of holies where Christ is seated at the right hand of the father interceding for us. This change my whole understanding of worship in our time.

Theology of Worship

Introduction

Ancient Greek philosophies placed significant emphasis on the spiritual realm over the physical, viewing the latter as inferior. This course explores the biblical perspective, which presents a more integrated view of the physical and non-physical realms, highlighting their interwoven and vital roles in human existence. The life and ministry of Jesus Christ exemplify this integration, as He demonstrated perfect humanity through both physical and spiritual actions. Thus, worship involves loving, praising, and honoring God through servanthood and service, reflecting the holistic nature of human existence.

Aim and Vision of the Course

The aim of this course is to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to critically evaluate contemporary worship practices and recommend more effective alternatives. This involves analyzing the cultural context, assessing practices through historical, cultural, and theological lenses, and developing, testing, and refining alternative approaches.

Essential Outcomes

1. Evaluate the effectiveness of a contemporary worship practice.

Cultural Context Analysis: Analyze the cultural context to identify the most natural forms of expression within a contemporary worship practice. Theological Framework Assessment: Assess contemporary worship practices through a historical, cultural, and theological framework to understand their effectiveness. Strengths and Weaknesses Report: Draft a report highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the worship practice according to established procedures.

2. Recommend alternative approaches to a contemporary worship practice.

Critical and Evaluative Thinking: Develop alternative worship approaches that more effectively address the cultural and theological needs of the context. Testing and Evaluation: Test and evaluate alternative approaches in a contemporary ministry context.

Re-evaluation and Refinement: Re-evaluate and refine alternative approaches based on analysis and feedback.

Critique of Worship and Service Dichotomy

The statement that music, praise, and singing to God are the spiritual parts of worship, while serving people is the physical part, is inadequate. Serving others in a physical way should be seen as a deeply spiritual act of reverence for God. Scripture teaches that all acts of service, whether physical or spiritual, are expressions of worship and devotion to God (Matthew 25:40, James 2:17).

The Power of Music in Worship

Music has powerful qualities, as demonstrated when David played the harp to calm King Saul (1 Samuel 16:23). However, it is important to note that music is not always portrayed positively in Scripture. Isaiah and Ezekiel describe the fall of Satan, who was once associated with music and worship in heaven (Isaiah 14:11-15, Ezekiel 28:13-17). This duality underscores the need for caution in using biblical words and phrases in worship to ensure clear expression of new covenant theology and language about Jesus.

In conclusion, this course provides a comprehensive study of worship, integrating biblical principles with contemporary practices, and equipping students to develop and refine effective worship approaches. The holistic view of worship as both physical and spiritual service to God and others is emphasized throughout the course.
