Emotional Intelligence & Productive Teams

05/14/2024

Scriptures reaffirms the importance of working with others and for others, and goes on to say that we should know how to interact and answer everyone. The Bibles asks us to value others above ourselves and not only look to our own interests but also to the interests of others. The Bible implies what emotional intelligence is all about, that is knowing yourself, managing your emotions to accommodate feelings of others and knowing emotions of others, and being able to interact with others effectively in different situations. In this lecture we learnt the life changing lessons cited in the following paragraphs below which if put to use will revolutionise our relationships and our teams, and transform us to better team players and better leaders.

Traditionally it was thought that people with high IQ are good at everything and those with low IQ may not be that good.Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is the general intelligence of an individual. Important and popular as it is, it does not account for much in effectiveness of one at work or in teams. Since work is usually in teams effective and productive people are the ones who are able to work with others and according to studies EI accounts for 80% of one’s effectivess as compared to only 20% for IE. Emotional Intelligence is understanding your emotions and self managing your emotions , and also understanding the emotions of others and effectively responding to their emotions and to situations you meet. If you increase the understanding of self and emotions of others you will increase effectiveness of your teams.Increase the understanding of yourself so that you can work with others better. If we incorporate the emotional intelligence skills learnt to our teams and ministries we will make them be more effective. Our emotions may not be good or bad but our response to our emotions can be morally and ethically right or wrong. We need a language of emotions in our teams and we need to avoid easy words that do not express emotion at all.

Understanding EI further and better, and team dynamics will result in effective and thriving teams, churches and society and personal development. Each member of the team should have attributes of a team player, selfless, committed and competent.Goleman’s five domains of Emotional intelligence are Self awareness, Self Management, Self Motivation, Building relationships and Empathy. In Goleman’s 5 domains of EQ, it very difficult to have relationship building and empathy if you don’t have much self awareness, self management and motivation for the first two require and build on the last three. Looking at it another way Four Branch Model of divides Emotional Intelligence into Strategic which includes Management(managing emotions in self and others to be able to achieve goals) and Understanding(understanding the emotion, language and signals used to convey emotions) and also Experiential which includes Perception (correctly perceiving emotions in self and others)and Facilitation( using emotions to facilitate thinking). These different perceptions of EI gives more insight into this important subject and increases our understanding of EI.We need to understand yourself and others more to be able to produce productive and effective teams. Temperaments and personality profiles, and Disc profile assist us understand ourself and others better but we need to note when using them that they are generic. This can act as a yardstick however in reality people are more complex and may not be boxed in these groups literally but are rather a blend of the different personalities in the Disc profile or other profiles.DISC profile divides people into (1) Dominant/Choleric who have attributes of propensity to lead and administer, are of strong character, and can give direction and pace (2) Influencers/Sanguine these are sociable, enthusiastic and optimistic (3) Stable/Phlegmatic they value people, are of good demeanor and are competent and (4) Complaint/Melancholic they display attention to detail, are analytical, organised and sensitive. If strengths of each group in the Disc profile is not properly harnessed it can turn into a weakness resulting in ineffectiveness of teams. We need to fully understand each individual and interact with them to march the attributes/personalities and allocate them in roles of their best fit. We must note that in reality a person may display a combination of the different traits and thus should be handled as he or she is.Emotions are very crucial in all spheres of our life. Nigel said in the lecture that emotions complement our reason rather than being in competition with them. Emotions tell us what we value. We can’t make important decisions without emotions.

We should get to know God.Spend time in prayer and listening from Him.Spend time in His word.Get to know the Holy Spirit and be guided by him.Do not forget fellowship. Connect with others on emotional levels, heart to heart connection will result in strong relationships. Be always kind and compassionate, accept others, take criticism positively, build and grow others, serve others, forgive others, think of others interest apart from your own, guide others and instruct and admonish others where necessary. If you hurt others be humble enough to earnestly apologise and seek others forgiveness. If you sin ask for God’s forgiveness and always ask Him to perfect your shortcomings those you know and the ones you do not know.

When there is an imbalance in ones physical, emotional, spiritual, vocational, financial, relational and mental spheres that will adversely affects the individual, others and ministry. You may see an individual isolating oneself, having emotional effect, may have trust issues, loss of relationships, may lose focus among other dyfuctional behaviours.A team we should strive for is a group of people working together to achieve common goals without compromising on relationships in achieving end results.Things may go wrong due to unhelpful behaviour, negative attitude, low performance and change of goals but you need to deal with the issues by stating your concerns, feeling and thoughts, asking open ended questions, keeping calm, focused and inviting a discussion without attacking the person but putting forward solutions. Good processes and outcomes require a clear flow of information on objectives, responsibility and authority.Teams may fail because we may not know the purpose, everybody may not be on board, we may not know stakeholders needs, we may not have the right abilities and skills, we may not have a healthy culture, we may not have good and effective processes and they may be hindrances to our growth.High performing team celebrate people, performance, participation, partnership, productivity, proactivity and playing together by doing something special, showering praise or even holding a celebration ceremony, recognise, encourage, surprise, commend and thank team or team members. If you are not a leader, adapt your behaviour to the team to increase chemistry by spending time with other team members in difficult situations and ask tough questions to teammates and leaders to help resolve issues that may disturb chemistry in the team.Emotionally intelligent team members follow their leaders by working collaboratively and exemplary by knowing the interest and needs of others and also what you require from them and sharing with others and assisting others.Effective teams commit to team goals and to each other by communicating to provide essential information. Communication is very important for effective teams because it impacts on processes and relationships.Good processes and outcome require clear information on objectives, accountability, responsibilities, authority, processes and challenges. This communication should be at all three levels to provide information, to portray sympathy and to show empathy and should include even non verbal communications. We need to institute or reinforce good practices or principles, and avoid pitfalls and bad practices as expounded in these lectures to build effective and productive teams.

The principles learnt can revolutionise team dynamics and will make our teams more effective, and not only our teams but understanding EI better and applying it in different situations we meet will positively affect every area of our day to day activities as we must interact with others in our families, with friends and neighbours,at work, with community,in our churches and in ministry. The lessons learnt have equipped me to handle relationships better, to also be a better team player and effectively manage a team if given team leadership responsibilities. I am personally blessed with these lectures such that I am applying them at work, at home, with other people,in church and in ministry and I have noted that I understand myself and others better and are able to manage my emotions and assist in building effective relationships and teams. The beauty with EI is that it can be learnt and improved, and is a driver to our effectiveness in our day to day chores and responsilities, and is at the disposal of everyone who is willing.

Praise Jesus. This was really amazing for me especially dealing with genre’s of Both OT and NT. Jesus Kindom Gospel has become to me more clearer than any other study have undertaken before.

The exgesis of the Gospels, drawing out principles form the context and the application have have come out so clearly and I look forward to use this valuable information as I promulgate the Word of God.

My approach to the preaching of the Gospel automatically changes from judgement and condemnation to people embracing Jesus as the King and Messiah. I LOVE THIS.

Community transformation

05/13/2024

I think this session teaches me much about love and care which our Lord Jesus Christ practiced when He was on earth. He fed 5 thousand and He healed the sick, that was humanitarian and caring. We are also encouraged to do have mission of humanitarian and transform the communities to potray the love of Christ such as advocating for social Justice and helping the poor. Early christians are a good example to us , Acts 2:42-46.

Mission and God's rule

05/13/2024

This was a very interesting session taught me about the call and my call in the mission of God. I was very challenged by the question;- what is world Christian? Which is to enlarge our hearts and vision and be committed to our father’s purpose for His world. Matthew 5:13 says; we are the light of the world. Matthew 28:19 also says; therefore go and make disciples of all nations, that is our father’s purpose.
