Community Chaplaincy Overview
Many people incorrectly disqualify themselves when it comes to serving Jesus in the world they live in. Either, they think themselves not qualified, not suitable, or not authorised. They might say, “That’s not my role…” or “I don’t know how to…” or “I’ll wait for my church to lead the way…” Meanwhile, God’s kingdom and will coming to our community is subsequently disadvantaged. Who the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are and your relationship with God.

So very practical
So good to be reminded of the need to:
– be present
My communities need to:
– be shepherded and I can be there for them
Really blessed and empowered!
Overall feedbacks and reviews:
The lessons provide a thoughtful and structured approach to chaplaincy, focusing on gradual engagement, relationship-building, and the power of presence. They offer a balanced view of what chaplains are expected to bring—patience, availability, and genuine care—without taking on roles that are better suited to other professionals.
Identifying the different types of listeners is effective in encouraging self-reflection on my listening habits. By identifying and naming different types of listening, they allow me to become more aware of our own tendencies and areas for improvement. The emphasis on “engaged listening” as the highest form provides a clear goal, especially for roles where empathy and active listening are essential. These lessons encourage a conscious shift toward being fully present, patient, and attentive in conversations, which is foundational for building strong, supportive relationships.
In addition, the introductory lessons provide a comprehensive toolkit for becoming an empathetic and active listener. It emphasises the balance between verbal and nonverbal communication, the importance of tuning in emotionally, and the value of open-ended questions. By following these steps, I can foster more profound connections, helping the speaker feel understood and respected. This is particularly valuable in supportive or pastoral roles, where listening is a key component of care.
Blessings gained:
These lessons have had a profound impact on my journey in chaplaincy, helping me to grow both personally and in how I connect with others.
1. Becoming More Self-Aware: Learning about different listening styles has made me more aware of my own tendencies. I’ve realised there are moments when I jump into problem-solving instead of just listening. Recognizing this helps me shift my focus to truly being present and hearing what others need to share.
I’m 2. Building Genuine Connections: Practising “engaged listening” has shown me the difference it makes when I’m fully present in a conversation. When I stop worrying about what to say next and just listen, people feel heard and valued. It deepens the bond we share and opens the door for trust to grow naturally.
3. Finding Clarity in My Role: The structured approach to chaplaincy reminds me that I don’t need to have all the answers or try to fix everything. My role is simply to be there with compassion and an open heart, to listen and offer support. This clarity brings me peace, knowing that just being present is often enough.
4. Growing in Empathy and Compassion: Focusing on listening with both my ears and my heart has made me more empathetic. I’m learning to truly understand what someone else is feeling, without judgment. This shift helps me connect more deeply with others and respond with compassion.
5. Communicating More Effectively: These lessons on asking open-ended questions and reflecting back have helped me become a better communicator. Instead of asking surface questions, I’m learning to ask things that invite people to share more. This approach creates space for meaningful conversations and shows others that I care about their experiences.
6. Learning the Value of Patience and Presence: One of the biggest takeaways has been the importance of simply being present. I’ve learned that I don’t always need to fill the silence or offer advice right away. Just sitting with someone, offering my time and attention, can be incredibly comforting.
7. Personal and Spiritual Growth: This journey is helping me grow, not just as a chaplain but as a person. Each time I listen with patience and openness, I feel myself becoming a bit more compassionate and grounded. It’s teaching me that real service comes from a place of humility and love.
8. Making a Real Difference: I’m seeing firsthand how these practices allow me to offer real support. When I listen without judgement, focus on understanding, and show up with a genuine desire to help, I create a space where others feel safe to share. It’s deeply rewarding to know that I can be a source of comfort simply by being there.
These lessons have transformed how I approach chaplaincy and life. They remind me that showing up with patience, an open heart, and a willingness to listen can make a meaningful difference in someone else’s life.
